STAFF PICK: SCRABBLE TOURNAMENT

By Kevin Ferguson

Created in 1938, Scrabble is also known around the world as Alfapet, FUNWORDER, Skip-A-Cross and Palabras Cruzadas, if you’re feeling spicy. It is possible for one to score up to 419 points by strategically placing the word “quizzify” among two triple word scores and one double. As reported in USA Today, famous Scrabble enthusiasts include John Travolta, Richard Nixon, Sting (of course), and Keanu Reeves. If those reasons haven’t convinced you to attend a Scrabble tournament, perhaps the possibility of a heated exchange over the “double challenge” rule (when a player demands a questionable word be verified by dictionary and loses their turn if the word is there) might sway you. Imagine Word Play or Best in Show in real life and the possibilities are endless.

Scrabble Tournament. Long Beach Public Library El Dorado Branch, 2900 Studebaker Rd, Long Beach 90814. 562.570.3136. Mon 6pm. Free. Signups are required.
