HS FOOTBALL PREVIEW: WEEK 3

By J [dot] J [dot] Fiddler

Poly (2-1) versus Carson (1-1) Veteran’s Memorial Stadium, 5000 E Lew Davis St, Long Beach 90808. Fri. 7pm.
This will be Poly’s first game at home this season. After apparently solving the problems with its offensive line, the Jackrabbits look to keep their momentum as they head towards league play. As for Carson, it’s all about running back Jack Sula. The 6-foot, 200-pound senior can line up anywhere on the field and hurt you. He’s coming off a stellar year, previously scoring 25 touchdowns and compiling over 2,200 all-purpose yards. But one man won’t be enough for the Colts to ruin the Rabbits’ home-opener: Poly’s offense plays its first complete game of the year in a 28-20 shootout.

Millikan (2-0) versus Downey (1-1) Millikan High, 2800 Snowden Ave, Long Beach 90815. Fri. 7pm.
Millikan returns to the field after a week off. They’ll have to stop Downey, which has given up a lot of points—67 to be exact—but has also scored a lot—63—in their two previous games. The Rams will weather the storm, 31-21.

Lakewood (1-2) versus Kennedy (2-1) Lakewood High, 4400 Briercrest Ave, Lakewood 90713. Fri. 7pm.
The Kennedy Fighting Irish went deep into the playoffs last year. Both teams are well coached, have quality talent and will use this game as a tune-up for the league schedule. The Irish misdirection run attack will be plugged up by Lakewood’s defense as the Lancers win, 13-7.

Compton (2-0) versus Fremont (0-3) Compton High, 601 S. Acacia Avenue, Compton
90220. Fri. 7pm.
After outscoring its first two opponents 125-7, Compton Coach Calvin Bryant said he hadn’t even glanced at film of Fremont. Why would you when you have a running attack that looks unstoppable? “We need to take care of us first,” Bryant said. They will, especially against a weak Fremont defense. Compton wins big again, 42-10.

Cabrillo (1-2) versus Mater Dei (2-0) Cabrillo High, 2001 Santa Fe Ave, Long Beach 90810. Fri. 7pm.
Cabrillo has its work cut out for it as it takes on its second Trinity League opponent in as many weeks. Mater Dei has outscored their first two opponents 108-38 and will do the same with the Jaguars: 38-14.

Jordan (2-0) versus Huntington Beach (1-1) Huntington Beach High, 1905 Main St, Huntington Beach 92648. Sat. 6pm.
Senior running back Tylik Carter is still going strong after his impressive performance last week, in which he racked up two touchdowns and over 200 yards on the ground. Jordan dominates, 21-7.
