FIXER SUPPER: ALIYE’S POACHED FENNEL

May 22, 2008

We chatted this week Aliye Aydin, owner of the organic produce delivery company beachgreens, about organic foods, buying (and growing) locally, and, toward the end of the coversation, about what’s good at the farmers markets right now.
For people who read this and decide to head to one of our local farmers’ markets, what do you [...]

FIXER-SUPPER: SEITAN IS YOUR MASTER

February 11, 2008

Recommendations from the weekend:
1. General tso seitan. Use slightly less soy sauce and vinegar than recommended.
2. Ginger braised seitan.
3. New Scandinavian Cooking. Hands down the prettiest (if not best!) cooking show that you don’t need money to watch. Search for it on PBS and start taping. Your future obsessions: langostines, gorgeous hillsides, grapeseed oil.

FIXER-SUPPER: VEGANOMICAL!

February 5, 2008

Is it just me, or does everyone have no dough? Lately, I’ve been scouring the Internet for recipes that will use every last bit of food I have. Rachel Ray’s once-a-day trips to the store are not an option.
But good flavor is! So here’s what I’ve made recently and LOVED. No pictures or links, cause [...]

FIXER-SUPPER: SEITAN MARSALA

January 17, 2008

Whipped up this simple and filling dish (taken from this recipe on Recipeezaar.com) last night in about 30 minutes, which is a record for this green kitchen gal. Not much to say about it, except that it is very flavorful and leaves your house smelling, well, homey, for hours afterward. Serve over cooked rice or [...]

FIXER-SUPPER: BHARTA (EGGPLANT DIP!)

January 17, 2008

Madhur Jaffrey’s recipe for the Indian dish Bharta (a smoked eggplant dish similar to baba ghanouj, included in her must-have cookbook World Vegetarian) is no-fail fun for the tummy of anyone you introduce it to. Some history, courtesy of Jaffrey:
“This is a popular village dish. The eggplant is put whole into the hot ashes of [...]

FIXER-SUPPER: ESSENTIAL POT PIE RECIPE

January 16, 2008

Among the top feelings in the world (for me) at the moment is effing NAILING a recipe. Last night’s Tofu Pot Pie recipe took me about two hours to make, but holy geez! Worth it. For you tofu haters out there, this is the one that will convince you otherwise. Delicious, though I messed up [...]

FIXER-SUPPER: SEITAN BURRITOS AND MORE

January 15, 2008

Here at Fixer-Supper HQ, I’ve spent 2008 making a number of totally NOMNOMNOM-worthy recipes . . . and not snapped any photos. Still working on this. Sorry!
One of the best was this baked sundried tomato risotto recipe from VeganYumYum, with grilled veggies and a balsamic vinegar reduction. I basically followed the same recipe, though I [...]

FIXER SUPPER 2008: NOW 95% MORE PESCETARIAN!

January 3, 2008

Clean Slate 2008, I say, and to that end, I’m going 95% pescetarian (and of that, vegetarian 75% of the time), with the remaining 5% percent being devoted to the times when I simply, well, want some goddamn meat in me—chicken (3%), pork (1.5%) and beef (.5%).
It won’t be easy (Goodbye, 212 Bistro’s Cuban [...]

FIXER-SUPPER: RADISH SNACKS!

December 6, 2007

Spotted this photo a few days ago over on Tastespotting, drooled, and clicked through to where the absolutely, ridiculously-great sounding recipe lives on add an egg. Radishes? Bread? Beer?
Don’t question. Just eat.
Over the summer, my pal Aliye showed me a super simple version of this recipe using just thinly sliced baguette slices, butter, super thinly [...]

FIXER-SUPPER: CHAMPAGNE COUS-COUS

December 4, 2007

A late night at the office last night led me to decide on this easy peasy Lemon Cream Chicken and Champagne Risotto recipe from Everyday with Rachel Ray. With two of Trader Joe’s flash-frozen, chicken broth glazed chicken breasts in the freezer (and some left over green beans in the fridge) I omitted asparagus from [...]
