What's That!?
WHAT’S THAT!?
Our weekly microscopic look at Long Beach

The rebel in me likes to think this mural is painted on some secret wall in the Long Beach Police Department, but lucky for us it’s in a more public place (and one that you can visit without being arrested). It’s pretty hard not to notice this small piece of a large mural that stretches a Long Beach block (which, as we know, can be pretty long). Unless, of course, you’ve been on the lam!

ANSWER: The dancing police are only a small part of a colorful Irie Park mural that extends down Santa Fe Avenue between 28th and 29th Streets. Painted between 1987-1990, the mural was a joint effort between Keith Williams, the West Side Community, Stephens Jr. High faculty and students, and Long Beach Community Development. It’s a bit old skool now, especially the part with the cassette tapes (which to me is, like, the raddest part). Check it out.
