DIAMOND D STUNTS, “BLUNTS AND HIP-HOP” MERCURY
“Diamond D’s been around for a long time, even though most people might not have heard of him. He started as a DJ in 1979 with the legendary Jazzy Jay, so even though he’s known as a producer, he is really one of the pioneers of hip-hop. He was doing his thing back when there were block parties and all that. I listen to all his albums, but I think this is the best one. The production on it has a real old-school hip-hop sound—not like all the new stuff out right now. It’s just real b-boy style that today’s hip-hop is missing. He used to be in a crew called Diggin’ in the Crates with Fat Joe, and even when Fat Joe left and continued that commercialized style, Diamond kept his dirty, gritty sound. This is one of the albums I make sure to pull out whenever I DJ—you know, to get the word out.” // HIGH HAT
