SPIRIT “BEST OF SPIRIT” EPIC (1973)

“Spirit was around in the late ‘60s, when LA was the place to be. They had so much energy and their own freaking sound—which was good, since they were an American band. They had a jazzy rock influence at times, and if you put a Spirit record on, someone will definitely say they’ve never heard anything quite like that. ‘Nature’s Way’ is a ballad-y slow song. I could listen to that like a million times. Their big commercialized hit, ‘I Got a Line on You,’ was more guitar-driven than their other songs—definitely the rocker on the album. ‘Fresh Garbage’ is where that jazz influence comes in. It’s a trippy song, kind of psychedelic in their own way. Maybe drug-influenced, but not any more than anything else at the time. They put some records out in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and Jay Ferguson did solo albums that had some pop success in the late’ 70s without the band, but it wasn’t the same. The Spirit of the late ‘60s was amazing, no doubt about it. To me, they didn’t care about commercials; they just spoke the truth about all kinds of subjects.” // DYZZY DIEHM
