SPADE COOLEY “SWINGIN’ THE DEVIL’S DREAM” PROPER PAIRS (2003)

“Big Ed’s Records would like to recommend Spade Cooley. He is the king of western swing. He was famous from the mid-’40s to the late ’50s. Western swing has fiddles and steel guitars in it, even though back then steel guitars were considered a hillbilly instrument. Swingin’ the Devil’s Dream is a great starter disc. It’s a double CD and it’s all killer western swing stuff. He’s well-known partially because he killed his wife on Christmas day. He stomped on her body until she died and went to prison for years. They let him out in 1961 to play a show, and he had a heart attack onstage and died. If you look him up online, there’s tons of information about him. His band became members of Laurence Welk’s band. Well, everyone except for the steel guitar player, because Laurence Welk was originally polka and didn’t need one.” // BIG ED
