SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE ‘SHELTER FROM THE ASH’ DRAG CITY
If you’re not sure what Ben Chasny has been doing with Six Organs of Admittance for the last nine years, “Alone With the Alone”—the first track on Shelter—provides some answers, with layers of open-tuned guitar that push through the boundaries of folk or rock to something a little more pure and roots-y. It’s a sound that comes across like slow ripples on the water, so captivating that you might miss the bare emotion in lyrics like “Coming to Get You”: “Did you tear what once was tight? / or was it just me? / I can’t tell between revelations / and the singularity.” Each piece on Shelter challenges the listener with atypical song forms, inviting you to lay back and reactivate your own suppressed life experiences. If you can, you’ll fully appreciate the soul that resonates throughout this record.
