SLEUTH, PSYCHO . . . SAVIOR?

Well, well, well. How dare you be such a kind, forgiving human being [Jenny Stockdale’s “From Sleuth to Psycho,” May 7]?  Who do you think you are? Jesus? Do you fish?

NOT SO GREAT FOR OUR SELF-ESTEEM

The Citizen Journalist Quote of the Day [Miles Clements’ “War of Words,” April 30]: “Journalism is one of the devices whereby industrial autocracy keeps its control over political democracy; it is the day-by-day, between-elections propaganda, whereby the minds of the people are kept in a state of acquiescence, so that when the crisis of an election comes, they go to the polls and cast their ballots for either one of the two candidates of their exploiters.” Upton Sinclair, The Brass Check (1919).

CHRIS GAFFNEY, 1950-2008

My husband and I loved Chris Gaffney [Theo Douglas’ “Somewhere In Time,” May 7]. We have great memories of dancing to Chris and the Cold Hard Facts at the Blue Cafe when we first started dating nine years ago. Chris Gaffney: an amazing musician and even better human being.

Gaffney will be sorely missed. Even from the afterlife, he was responsible for one of the best local music shows in years.

KNOLLSWHERESVILLE

I am not in support of Marshalls or tearing down the Roberts building [Theo Douglas’ “The Marshalls Plan,” April 30]. It is unfortunate there is no clear vision of how the Bixby Knolls area should look and feel. We are being directed by politicians and not by the people who live here. I moved to this area 10 years ago and opened my business because of the character of the homes and Long Beach in general. Bixby was once something special—-people came from all over—and I think that it will be again, but not if we don’t demand it.

How is it that some buildings service populations for centuries while matters of taste and style dictate the squandering of resources elsewhere in a couple of decades? Why build a downtown mall and tear it down just a few years later? Maybe developers should be forced to post bonds insuring they don’t build crap or maybe the citizenry should be forced to make do with what their elected, corrupt leaders institute and allow.

SUCKER ON THIS!

I’m a sucker for a The Good, the Bad and the Ugly reference [Chris Ziegler’s “Every Gun Makes its Own Tune: the Good, the Bad and Los Mysteriosos,” April 30].

SIDEKICKING HIMSELF

I’m not sure what point Mr. Feenstra was trying to make [David Feenstra’s letter to the editor, May 7]. As a reader, I’ve seen the Press-Telegram, once a great read for local news, go further and further from point of excellence. I’m not sure whether to cancel my subscription in protest, or to keep it to support the remaining excellent writers and reporters, whose work I’m seeing less and less. As for the letter you mailed The District, you really should have proofed it. I found a few more things that the letters editor missed in the form of incomplete sentences, and missing articles and referents. As a copy editor, how can you expect what you wrote to be taken seriously?

I learned a valuable lesson: Don’t type up letters from your Sidekick 3; it will only make you look like an ass. I am not too proud to laugh at my own screwups.

Citizen Journalist Quote of the Day: “The job of trying to tell the truth about people whose job it is to hide the truth is almost as complicated and difficult as trying to hide it in the first place. We journalists are of course obliged to cover the news, but our deeper mission is to uncover the news that powerful people would prefer to keep hidden.”
