This Week: Ten Ton, Scary Spice and Trader Joe’s

SEXY BEASTS!
Your cover boys [Jennie Warren’s photo of Crystal Antlers for “Trust and Love,” April 16] are some sexy beasts!

Does anybody else out there miss the record store Ten Ton? Once located on Broadway at Temple, then housed on Fourth before it was Retro Row, this was the place for the best domestic indie releases/import shoe-gaze Brit-pop, etc. It’s true, back then Long Beach was Sublime-dominated, but then again Bradley did give a shout out to Scott at Ten Ton (Robbin’ the Hood), and where do you think he got Primal Scream 12 inches to sample? Furthermore, about Bogart’s—-although I had to sneak in the few times I went—my memories include Blue Airplanes/Jazz Butcher, Tad/Nirvana, Lush Ride, Chapterhouse, Sebadoh and Pavement, just to name a few. Yes, Long Beach is becoming a new hotbed for local music—but the past was equally inspiring.

SCARY BEAST!
What, they bring in Scary Spice for a little office fun [Heather Reger’s “Poop Scoop,” April 16]? How odd. Who was taking care of all the animals if they are so short staffed? Another attempt to move the spotlight.

You are doing wonders for the animals by going after the truth. As you know, you have just scratched the surface. Please keep going with this story. You are doing a terrific job!

PEACE, OUT
Homeland is a gem [Theo Douglas’ “R.I.P. Frosty Freeze,” April 16]. I haven’t seen anything like it elsewhere.

ON THE OTHERING HAND . . .
Dr. Kevin MacDonald is an embarrassment to CSULB [Will Swaim’s “Where’s the Heroic Defender of the White Race?” April 9]. His existence as a tenured professor makes our school look like the bar for hate speech is rather low. In this climate of school violence and rape culture, his contributions of racism perpetuate and add to the already dangerous campus life for all minorities. All research is biased; there is no excuse for “looking for” inequalities in humans, nor in his overt demonization and Othering.

DON’T BOGART THE WETLANDS, COYOTE
If you look at the fine print in the project, it leaves a huge chunk of space for the coyote to still thrive and hunt [Dave Wielenga’s “With Hope as Strong as Certainty,” March 26]. How many of you shop at the Trader Joe’s that was built in the same area? How much bias can you guys have? Please get all the facts before insulting my intelligence. Thank you for trying, though.

WIELENGA RESPONDS My story didn’t mention any project; thus, no fine print to look at. Actually, now that I think of it, no real facts to get all of, either. It was kinda biased, though: I was amazed and inspired by my walk through the Los Cerritos Wetlands, and came right out and said so. Sometimes I shop at that Trader Joe’s, too.

OH, WE CAN HELP IT, ALL RIGHT
Why does your paper stink? Like literally, it smells! Whenever I sit down and open a brand-new issue, I think it’s me. But thank god, I realize it’s you guys! Especially the cover. I know you guys can’t help it, but PEE-EWWW.
