LETTERS: VOL. 1, ISSUE 49

“Yes, it makes the mind weary some days—but why do you think they call it work?”

CAN’T SPELL “PITY” WITHOUT “P-T”
There’s so much coverage now about the most recent cuts at the Press-Telegram [Dave Wielenga’s “What’s the Story with the Press-Telegram?” March 5]. Where was all this attention last year when they let go of their entire ad production staff, photo imaging department, page layout and page control departments? Did their jobs and contributions to the daily operation mean less than those in the newsroom? There were many talented, dedicated people who contributed to getting the paper out every day who were let go last year but only now do people take notice of the state of the paper. I guess even now they will remain unrecognized and unsung.

I still read the P-T every morning, or I should say scan it. I hope someone with deep pockets vested in our community takes a risk and can purchase the paper so we can have a true daily newspaper worthy of the 35th biggest city in the country.

I find it amazing that P-T Editor Rich Archbold survived the scrapping of what was once a great newspaper, an important voice for Long Beach residents and a good place to work. I find it totally amazing that he has the lack of pride to continue to preside over the flaming hulk for which he is largely responsible. Fawning coverage of City Hall’s elected and appointed leaders, along with blind boosterism for every stunt they backed or proposed (DisneySea, the Ice Dogs, the many permutations of the Queen Mary, and an economically anemic Navy base reuse rip-off) rendered local coverage useless and suspect to the readership. Opponents of such boondoggles, along with many residents concerned with the quality of life in the LB area, were generally mocked. Dean Singleton is merely the greedy cynic who applied the final stab to the P-T’s back. Archbold and his management minions, who each received an extra 30 pieces of silver (from seller Knight-Ridder) to stay on following Dean’s initial bloodletting in 1997, facilitated the paper’s long decline, making it ripe for Singleton’s rape.

Man there is nothing worse than sleazy bottom line business tactics to force people to work for less while the people at the top sit on their sun deck scratching their balls enjoying a cup of International Delight.

It is unfortunate that the streamlining or combining of efforts or downsizing—whatever you may want to call it—has been happening for 10 years but is only now receiving press as it involves the union?! Credit, finance, circulation, marketing, human resources, imaging, artists, production staff, page layout, makeup departments, pagination, mailrooms, even some advertising divisions and Internet departments have all been condensed into shared departments with our other papers. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR OVER 10 YEARS! And we still have more than 88,000 people PAYING for the paper EVERY DAY! Please know that I am proud to work at the Press-Telegram and proud of the service I provide. Yes, it makes the mind weary some days—but why do you think they call it work? I, too, reported to work one day, years ago, to find that my position had been eliminated and was reassigned. But I ended up in a better position! You folks at the District have a nice little magazine, but come on, GET OFF IT ALREADY!

You’re stretching it referring to the P-T as a “newspaper.”
