SIDES: YELLOW SUBMARINE ROLL

Sushi Studio’s Yellow Submarine Roll is deceptively simple: The menu claims the roll is filled with white rice and vegetable tempura stuffed inside slices of mango with crunchy flakes and sweet sauce on top. But there’s more to it. In fact, I will go to my grave swearing that there are drugs in this food—it’s that addicting and that good. The true sign of its greatness? The Yellow Submarine has wowed all my skeptical meat-eater friends who believe Japanese food has to have fish in it to be worthwhile. Like most sushi, this roll doesn’t look like enough food to fill a healthy American appetite, but the eight pieces always leave me stuffed for days. I’m adventurous with food and enjoy trying new things, but I can’t eat at Sushi Studio and forgo this meal—it’s an absolute standard that every person in Long Beach should have at least once. On the whole, burritos have been my favorite food for as long as I can remember. But on an individual basis, the Yellow Submarine is what I would order as a dead man walking on death row.
