Big Belly Deli

Barely beyond Huntington Beach, Big Belly Deli is a little place that sometimes gets forgotten between Main Street and Balboa. But that’s not to say that the deli doesn’t do a big business—even in the coldest months, the deli reels in beach-going appetites. It’s not hard for a place so small to get so packed, but that’s more a sign of quality than anything else, with sandwiches (all the classic deli favorites with an Italian spin) that by now have a clear cut of fame. The most famous of all is the meatball sandwich, a submarine of a thing overflowing with marinara. The sandwiches may not seem too big at first, but it’s inevitable that you’ll slow down after a few bites, surely saving the rest for a second meal. Being the wise beach-going place that it is, Big Belly Deli also offers up beer for those who want to keep their dining inside. And for even more variety, there’s pizza, too, but that doesn’t make for the same kind of portability—somehow the sandwiches always seem to avoid the little grains of sand that kick up off the beach.
