BEHIND BARS

Anonymous Confessions of a Bartender

“The most important piece of advice I could give a customer is to employ moderation. I use this one story as an example: one night, our entire place was rented out for a corporate event. Typically, when a company rents out our bar it’s pretty tame—even though the bar’s open, most people keep their intake pretty low so they don’t become known as the office lush. The event was typical, it had a lot of people but they were all more or less quiet. There were PowerPoint presentations, polite conversation, catered food, etc. As usual, everyone exercised restraint—a beer here, glass of wine there, etc.

“Everyone played it pretty conservatively except this one guy: before dinner was served, he was already pretty gone. Then he started yelling at his poor wife and yelling at the waiter, embarrassing not only his family but the whole company. After dinner, he went out for a cigarette, but once outside he slipped, lost his balance, and fell head first onto the concrete. There was blood all over the floor, the ambulance came and took him away and we haven’t heard anything about him since. He could be okay, or he could have died; regardless, the whole ordeal probably would never have happened if he had just taken it easy.”
