1554 Enlightened Black Ale

When it comes to dark, full-bodied beers, there’s nothing like a rich stout with a creamy head. Properly poured—in two parts, and in a 20-ounce tulip glass like those filled at E.J. Malloy’s—a pint of stout is a mature beast, profound yet unpretentious. But if you’ve had your fill of Guinness for the week, and have already been introduced to Samuel Adams Black Lager, stop by BevMo! for a six-pack of 1554 Enlightened Black Ale—Fat Tire’s lesser-known sibling. Based on a recipe dating back to the 16th century, this New Belgium offspring weighs in lighter than your typical stout or porter, while maintaining that big taste and ebony complexion enthusiasts can admire. On the nose, 1554 seduces with subtle bouquets of dark chocolate and roasted espresso, which soften in the mouth and intensify as the beer warms. Warm beer? It’s true. Stop clinging to your ice cubes for a second and you’ll be rewarded handsomely. This beer improves as the mercury rises, making it ideal for the coming summer months. So get it out of the bottle and into a glass, preferably the goblet-style featured on the label, where it can touch the air and fully express its malty, caramel notes. But you don’t want to rush this beer. Set aside a Sunday evening. Break out the Nina Simone. Plate up some fresh strawberries and smoked Gouda, a little paper-thin prosciutto, and get to nibbling between generous drinks, balancing savory with sweet. In the end, 1554’s short finish is redeemed by its ability to conjure the most delicious of childhood memories: messy s’more bites tinged with the taste of earthy campfire smoke.
