DRINK OF THE WEEK: THE SHADY GRADY

If the standard Mai Tai gives you a sugar headache, and Sex on the Beach just doesn’t sound cool enough to yell across the bar anymore, visit with Shady Grady at Parker’s Lighthouse in Shoreline Village. “I’m Shady Grady,” says John Grady, Parker’s Lighthouse bartender, as he pours grenadine into an empty hurricane glass. “After 23 years here, they’ve finally named a drink after me.” The Shady Grady—this time referring to the multi-layered sunset of juices and booze in the drink itself—runs a little on the high end. For $10, you get a glass tube of decadent, 80-proof, 10 Cane rum; face time with Grady himself; and a view of the lovely, corroding Queen Mary. (Show up early if you want Grady to make it for you, though—there may be a line of hungry fishmongers.) Taking great pride in his concoction, Grady pours the drink slowly, layer by layer. First, the grenadine, then ice, then 10 Cane (lots of it), pineapple, orange juice and, for good measure, a drop of sweet and sour. The only drawback to this premium cocktail (and perhaps it’s not even a drawback if you can handle your liquor) is that you start to miss it when it’s half finished and cry when it’s over—because although you don’t really want to shell out another $10, you realize you have no choice.
