FILM EVENT: SADIE THOMPSON
Raoul Walsh’s 1928 silent drama stars Gloria Swanson as a troubled young woman who flees San Francisco to start a new life in Pago Pago on the island of Tutuila, only to encounter a pesky missionary who aims to force her to go back home and resume her wretched former existence. Based on a story by William Somerset Maugham, the film was nominated for several Academy Awards and was remade once a decade into the ‘50s. Lip readers should get a kick out of Swanson’s potty mouth. The screening is preceded by short films and other good things, and snacks can be had for scandalously low prices.
Long Beach School for Adults Auditorium, 3701 E Willow St, Long Beach 90815. 562.997.8000 ext 7198. Fri 7pm. $1.
