‘TWO AND A HALF HOURS OF FARMLAND’

DJ Angelina: You can take the girl out of the Good Foot–but you can’t take the Good Foot out of the Girl

After first assisting Dennis Owens behind the turntables when Good Foot DJ and partner Rodi Delgadillo moved away from Long Beach, DJ Angelina, aka Angie Lawson, was a regular DJ at the club.  In July 2006, she moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she is currently in her third year at the Ohio State College of Medicine. But that doesn’t mean Angelina has given up spinning―or dancing: “Basically, when I have time, I want to get out and dance!”

How was it arriving in Columbus after having spent so many nights out in Long Beach and Orange County deejaying? Did you research the Columbus clubs at all or jump right in?

I had some typical Californian misconceptions about the Midwest, and I was really afraid Columbus would be boring. Turns out, there are a couple fun clubs here. Somebody sent me a link to a funk-soul night called Funkdefy, so I stopped in and talked the DJs into letting me bring some records in for the next show. I’ve been spinning with them about once a month ever since.
Are there any similarities between Columbus soul clubs like Funkdefy and the Good Foot?
The soul clubs here are nowhere near the size of the Good Foot, but we do have a good number of regulars and a surprising number of breakers, so it’s pretty fun. Since we don’t have to worry about keeping a huge crowd dancing, we tend to play more obscure songs than dance anthems. The bummer is that to see a bigger soul singer like Sharon Jones, you usually have to drive somewhere like Cleveland, which is about two and a half hours of farmland away from Columbus.
What’s the one track you’d request to hear at the Good Foot anniversary, if you could make it?
I actually have three tracks on the Good Foot 10-year anniversary CD!
Is there a case of once a Good Foot DJ, always a Good Foot DJ; does it stay with you wherever you go?
I think it’s true―once a Good Foot DJ always a Go od Foot DJ. I’m still a little disappointed here when I put on a song I know would get the whole place dancing at the Good Foot, and nothing really happens. Getting the crowd moving gives you a kind of rush you never forget.
