LOCAL WISDOM: KATIE McCOY, PROMOTER AND MUSICIAN

Over the past four years, Katie McCoy—aka Katie Kill, aka Kate—has booked at least one or two shows per week in Long Beach. “I have loved every minute!” she says. Beyond promoting, McCoy is also a songwriter—“and sometimes a singer.” We asked McCoy about where she spends her days and nights, and also for her favorite drink in Long Beach. Turns out it’s tap water, and rightly so: “It’s free!”

What bars in Long Beach do you frequent?
Actually, it’s a toss up with any of the popular ones—especially for last call, because they all hold people to watch in rare form!

What is your favorite restaurant? Pancho’s Mexican Food (4925 E. Pacific Coast Hwy., Long Beach 90804. 562.597.7891). My mom used to eat there when she was pregnant with me—old habits die hard!

If you found a $100 bill on the street, how and where would you spend it? First, I would pick up the records Dennis Owens has on hold for me at Fingerprints (4612-B E. Second St., Long Beach 90803. 562.433.4996; indierecordshop.com), and then go next door and buy a cheap pair of jeans from Buffalo Exchange (4608 E. Second St., Long Beach 90803. 562.433.1991; buffaloexchange.com). The rest is not suitable for print!

What are some things about Long Beach you can never tell enough people about? The art walks, SoundWalk and Good Foot at the Que Sera (1923 E. Seventh St., Long Beach 90813. 562.599.6170; thequesera.com) on the second Friday of each month!

If you were forced or chose to move away from here, how and where would you spend your last night in town?
At home with my Bible praying—not down on Fourth Street, buzzed, doing the Shuffle* and heckling old flames! Aw . . . all this is wishful thinking! Really, I would have a huge show featuring all my favorite bands I’ve booked in the last four years, and I’d kiss my friends goodbye!

*Editor’s note: According to Yelp’s Sara L., the “Fourth Street Shuffle” translates as “the drunken stretch of Fourth Street beginning at the Pike and ending at the V,” but really, it’s just what you do when you’re on Fourth Street. You’re plastered. Period.
