Ikey Owens plays keyboards most famously in Mars Volta but also alongside everyone from Dub All Stars to Mastodon to locals like Crystal Antlers and Coaxial and his own bands Look Daggers and Free Moral Agents, and he splits his office hours between Portfolio and the Prospector when he’s not out on tour.

Shoreline Bike Path “I got busted for having no bike lights. But at least I got to watch the ocean and it was pretty pleasant while I got run for warrants. If you look a little weird or you’re black or Hispanic or you look like you maybe enjoy methamphetamine, then you’re gonna get pulled over. Might as well be by the ocean.”

Midget Town “There’s a really old fraternity called Sphinx—a high school fraternity at Poly that’s like a hundred years old—and the people from that club all live in Virginia Country Club. And people always think that’s where Midget Town is. But no one can find it. My theory is that the idea just developed from a bunch of drunk frat boys—just drunk talk compiled over the past hundred years.”

Jongewaard’s Bake ‘N Broil “The best dessert in Long Beach is the French apple pie with whipped cream.”

The Prospector “In Long Beach there really are no bad venues. Pretty much everywhere you play, people treat you nice and you don’t get shafted. But at Prospector, you get to keep all the money from the door and you can get a good steak there!”
