It was just after midnight when police received a frantic call from a mother who complained that her family had just been attacked and was being held hostage outside their home—by raccoons. Working off the premise that the animals simply had assumed the empty house was in foreclosure, police contacted Long Beach Animal Control, who arrived on the scene to oust the furry squatters. Officers assisted the family with getting back into their home but found no signs of any raccoons, as the masked mammals had already moved on to a new property with a bigger family room.

Curious neighbors phoned police Saturday evening after they grew suspicious of a man parked outside a nearby business. Officers responded by completely surrounding the place, hoping to catch the man in the middle of whatever crime he might have been committing. In yet another sign of our upcoming theft-based economy, the police found the man loading up on all the free metal he could steal, dumping the scraps over a chain-link fence and into the back of his truck.
