In what may have been a glimpse into the chaos of a potentially petroleum-free future, a teen reported a narrow escape after a couple of men tried to rob him of his skateboard. Apparently looking for alternate modes of four-wheel transportation, the two men approached the kid in the Towne Center parking lot and demanded his skateboard. But that didn’t work. Instead, they tried wrestling him to the ground. That didn’t work, either. The wily teen was somehow able to escape and skate free, while the would-be robbers were left to huff away on foot.

Patrol officers saw their suspicions piqued when they watched a Pontiac Grand Am speed down Washington Boulevard in the earliest morning hours. Acting on their instincts (and the mid-’90s Grand Am itself, known for such amazing amenities as air conditioning and a functional engine), the cops tailed the car and ran the plates― and discovered it was recently reported stolen in LA. The patrol officers called the car in and waited for backup. It wasn’t until 3:30 a.m. that other officers arrived, but it was then that police pulled the driver over and made the arrest without incident, picking up the 42-year-old man from Long Beach on his way back to the 605
