BUY CURIOUS: MICHAEL SCOTT KENT PRINTS

By Ellen Griley

I don’t own a beach house, but if I did I’d fill it with prints like this one from 1983 by Michael Scott Kent. There are those of you who may only know this restaurant by its current name, Mahé, but not too long ago it was the Glide’er Inn, home to unforgettable clam chowder and too many childhood memories to list here in their entirety. I have a friend who recalls realizing for the first time that her mother was drunk during dinner at the Glide’er; for me, it’s listening in awe as my father identified the model airplanes hanging from the ceiling. Kent drew lots of other places, too, like the LA Red Car and Joe Jost’s, and so does Tim Foltz—the Harbor House, the Katin store, Sam’s Seafood, Captain Jack’s. Available framed and alone, these prints capture Seal Beach and Long Beach as we once knew them—and quite possibly, as we will know them only for a short while longer.

Available at the Picture Show Gallery, 231 Main St, Seal Beach 90740. 562.598.1600. $15-49.
