Cosmetics for a dollar? It’s true

A few weeks ago, I received an e-mail from a friend that sounded too good to be true: a cosmetics company by the name of e.l.f. had recently been purchased by Nordstrom and was now unloading all products—blushes, foundations, eye liners, powders, etc.—for just one dollar. (Yes!!! $1.) The reason? Any product bearing the old e.l.f. logo could not be sold in Nordstrom stores. Were I a wise consumer, this would be my cue to Google e.l.f. and do a little research. Instead, I clicked through to the website, purchased $13 worth of goods—Plumping Lip Glaze in “Fire Coral”; Super Glossy SPF 15 Lip Shine in “Watermelon”; nail polish in “Fair Pink”; Natural Radiance Blusher in “Shy”; and a total face brush, blush brush, and an eye shadow brush; plus shipping—and only then paused to wonder if I’d just been duped. Turns out the pitch wasn’t true—according to various magazine write-ups, the company has been around for years; no mention of Nordstrom—but the deal—decent cosmetics and accessories, including eyelash curlers and makeup remover pads, sold online for a dollar—is true. Phew! What’s more, it appears you can hunt down shipping and other discount codes, and there’s free shipping always on orders over $75. Not everything at e.l.f. (shorthand for eyes lips face) is $1, though: makeup cases will set you back up to $12, and assorted bath and body products—with names like peony petal, lavender blossom, and pineapple mango—are three for a whopping $10 (full sets with matching loofahs are $15). Of course, e.l.f. won’t compare to the stuff found at, say, Sephora, but if your idea of a makeup counter is the CoverGirl shelf at Rite Aid, save the trip—and 75% of your money. e.l.f. is a deal worth making.
