BUY CURIOUS: PLANT SALE

If you’re scratching your head about what to plant in that bare patch of dirt behind the house— or just need some inspiration on what to put in those vacant terracotta pots littering your balcony—then get down to the LBCC Horticultural Club’s Friday Plant Sale. Organized and run by the Horticultural Club for nigh 40 years, proceeds from the weekly event help with funding—supplies, scholarships, etc. At the plant sale, you’ll find hundreds of hearty species spanning half a dozen different climatic zones, including an impressive variety of small trees, bushes, ferns, herbs, succulents, and myriad flowering plants. Spatially challenged? Surely there’s a corner or windowsill in your studio that’s just begging for a houseplant: three-foot variegated snowbushes, flecked with reds, pinks, whites and minty greens sell for only $15, and a delightful three-foot Fiddle-Leaf Fig can be had for the same sinful price. And don’t fret the financials, because the majority of the plants fall well below the $15 tag. On top of the better-than-nursery prices and a knowledgeable staff, the nursery’s tranquil environment alone makes a visit worthwhile—check out the giant decorative koi pond and Genghis, a terrifically plumed rooster who roams freely about the grounds, hens in tow. Winter may be on its way, but in Southern California that’s no reason to quit gardening. Make your home happy—get yourself some flora!
