‘LBMA After Dark’? Well, duh!

‘COCKFIGHT’ by LORI LAMONT
Look, I don’t know why it took this long for the Long Beach Museum of Art to hold one of these “Evenings at . . .” events. It’s not like it’s a new concept; museums from LACMA to OCMA have been holding these things for years; the kind where you check out the art, drink a little hooch, listen to a little music and talk a little cultured trash.
So, it’s kind of amazing that LBMA’s “LBMA After Dark” event on Feb. 28 is the museum’s first foray into this business. After all, this side of the Getty Villa, there are few Southern California museums better suited to such an event. The LBMA’s location above the Pacific, its panoramic views, landscaped grounds and the Craftsman beauty of the Anderson house make it a natural.
Why did it take so long?
“Yeah, I don’t know,” said Ed Fosmire, LBMA’s director of development.
There it is. The man doesn’t know, okay? Look, the point is, it’s here. “LBMA After Dark” is here. Besides being able to peruse the museum’s permanent collection as well as its excellent portrait show—“About Face: Portraiture Now,” through March 23—“After Dark” will also mark the opening of “Three” featuring the works of Long Beach painters Fern Bowen, Carl Aldana and Lori LaMont.
“Long Beach has such a vibrant art scene that part of our new initiatives is going to be to promote local artists,” Fosmire said.
So, they’ll be doing that. There will also be music by Blank Blue’s DJ Nobody (not his real name) and a performance by Fallopian Artopians, billed as a “live collaborative female painting troupe.” There’s going to be food, drink and an overall mood, Fosmire hopes, that’s “pretty loungy.”
He also said there are plans to do this at least four times a year, but depending on its popularity, it could be more often. Oh, and by way of full disclosure, The District is a media sponsor for “LBMA After Dark.” Uh huh. You’re welcome.
