Hailing from Fountain Valley (quite a ways from Ohio), Horrors of Toledo draw from a wide range of musical influences, from Bauhaus’ dark goth to the Cramps’ kitschy zombie rockabilly to the more modern sounds of bands like Interpol, but they add just enough pop-punk melodicism to keep things from getting depressing. Having already shared stages with the likes of the Pixies’ David Lovering and punk legend Mike Watt, the band is well on its way to establishing a place for themselves in the local music pantheon.

The Horrors of Toledo at the Glass House
    By: Red Vaughn

The Horrors of Toledo at the Glass House, Thursday, March 20

With its name inspired from Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The Pit and the Pendulum,” the Horrors of Toledo—that’s El Greco’s Spanish Toledo, not the depressing Lake Erie burg—have already distinguished themselves by opening for Stephen Perkins’ heady art-rock band Banyan and having rocked-out at Mike Watt’s 50th birthday party in the LBC. Ex-Mosquito bassist Sashelle Hedrick and firebrand Ryley Northrop fittingly met at a punk rock show just a few short months ago and, both being indisguisably young, social consciousness turned to boiling blood. Though they’re just as sober as a Monday night Minor Threat and more serial-gonzo than the strictest manifesto, these are good pensive punks who’d be delighted—nay, honored—at some kind (any kind) of uprising. How else explain songs like “PuppeTeer,” where the whole question of freethinking individualism and autonomy are pretty casually doubted for one particular Pinocchio-type. Such is the bulk of HOT’s set list, a charged-up omphalos to the seedy underbelly of life, that whiz-kid-taking-a-whiz type of thing. If you check out the show at the Glass House, ask them why they sing about A) the “Devil’s Eyes,” a particularly gothy number and B) “Empty Eyes,” a particularly ungothy Pixies-esque song about nightmares in your eyes. Eyes. Eyes. The windows of the soul, and these would like to clean your windows. (Red Vaughn)

    Bio about Horrors Of Toledo

Horrors of Toledo came into existence in 2007 when the members Sashelle Hedrick of O.C. (19) and Ryley Northrop of Norco (21) met and fell in love after a show in Orange County where Sashelle was playing bass in her former band Mosquito. Ryley and Sashelle played with a few drummers for a few months before finally finding their new drummer Glen Montemayor (24) of Hacienda Heights.
Their influences are Murder By Death ,The Cramps ,Bauhaus ,Crime ,The Fall ,TSOL ,Against Me ,the Clash, X ,The Shins ,Bowie,The Birthday Party, Joy Division , Hazil Adkins , Tall Dwarfs ,Billy Bragg ,Destroyer, Johnny Cash ,and too many more to mention.
They came up with the bands name after reading one of Edgar Allen Poe’s short stories “The Pit and the Pendulum” based on horrors of the Spanish inquisition and also liking that the abbreviation of the name is HOT.
Ryley is inspired by the writings of Poe and the seedy underbelly of life.
Ryley writes the music and lyrics and plays guitar while Glyn drummer and Sashelle bass form a dynamic rhythm section.
The band is finishing recording for its debut on new label Vamped Records .
They have been playing anywhere and everywhere around Southern California , along the way opening up for David Lovering of the Pixies and his Unholy Three, Banyan and the honored of playing legendary punk bassist Mike Watts 50th birthday party in Long Beach .
They have played live on KXLU fm in Los Angeles 2 times over the summer and their promo is getting played on KUCI ,KXLU and few other stations nationwide until the album comes out.
They are scheduled to play March 20th at the Glasshouse in Pomona opening up for one of their favorite local bands the Deadly Syndrome.
They plan on putting their logos on Frisbees, Sweat Socks ,wristbands ,and headbands.
When not playing music they enjoy playing Scrabble in the dark, tea parties in the sand, and mixing Jones sodas together .Sashelle once made a famous sculpture using burnt Top Ramen noodles.
