Long Beach Musicians League
Mission Statement
Our goal is to bring together all Long Beach Area Musicians to share knowledge and foster a learning environment for the advancement of personal growth in music.
Why:
When I moved to Long Beach I couldn’t swing a stick without hitting a musician. I ended up playing music with a lot of competent, self critical musicians who could not seem to break out of the comfort zone that is the garage. Others I met played in bands one time or another, but they were too stuck living in their past to create anything new.
When:
Monday Nights at the Puka Bar Stage 8:00 to 11:00 pm. 710 Willow in LB.
This is a rough idea of what a month would look like.
First Monday
Music theory and application. The night will include 1 hour lecture and 2 hours lab. We will cover topics such as Modes and Scales, Introduction to Melody, Sound Basics, Tone Technique, Harmonica Basics, the Capo, and an introduction to contrapuntal music theory. The first week we will cover Alternate Tunings.
Second Monday
The goal is to get bands to unplug and listen to each other. Let’s just say almost acoustic.
Two Sets of music and some constructive criticism.
Third Monday
I hope to have LB Musician League members bring something to the table. New song ideas, if not I would like to bring in some authorities in the music business to answer questions.
Fourth Monday
Long Beach Huntington’s Acoustic Electronica Noise Improvisational Freak Out
All learning sessions will be recorded and podcasted.
All other ideas will be entertained. I hope to see all of you on January 7th 2008.

If anyone is intrested please post your questions and ideas here.
Thanks, LBH
rad idea! Now I just wish I was any good at an instrument.
Thanks,
I would like to think it would encompass every thing music, if there is an intrest in recording or live sound, or vocal I would hope it would get brought up. I am not a good musician, but I enjoy music enough to put some effort into enriching an allready diverse music scene. I have been given a room to try it out. I have a friend who teaches at the CC another who plays in an electric band and a neighbor who will program the third week for me, so I at least have a month planned. If there is no intrest I will crawl back to my drawing board lay in the fetal position and cry and write songs about the smell of darkness....
More questions and comments welcome,
Thanks for the encouragement,
LBH

Here is an interesting musical topic from the NY Times.
Today on Indie 103.1 Joe Escalante mentioned LB Musicians League. He thought it was a good idea. So I will keep shamelessly promoting my self.
Please post your 562 area events on myspace.com/club562

best luck man, i got flu or else i would come by...
Last Night we opened the LBML with a lecture and demonstration on alternate tunings.I will be writing a new song to present next week. Did you know there are over 100 alternate tunings. If that dose not blow away your song writing doldrums nothing will. We were also lucky enough to have my friend Mr. B show up and play some of his original music. We also had a few musicians get up in the lab and create some improvisational music in alternate tunings. I will be podcasting them as soon as I have time to edit out the applause! Thanks once again to Stan Dewitt, Mr. B and all volunteers who participated. I am looking for a Singer Song writer or band to fill a 45 min spot next week. So keep your ears open for anyone who wants to Play at Long Beaches newest Acoustic Venue. The Puka Bar.
Thanks once again, LBH
Another great show
As a new gig booker at the Puka Bar I can only hope to get a quality show like I saw last night at the Prospector. All three bands were smoking hot. I just wish the place was more viewer friendly. The Puka Bar is the old KB Club, for those of you who remember the room is good sized and has a PA with monitors. I hope all will find the Puka for your gigs. We have built a stage and are in the process of tuning the room for sound. This weekend the DeadBeat Dads play on Saturday Night about 9:00Pm and Ditmar will be spinning great vinyl. Come check it out, good size and good sound, good drinks and great bartenders.

Hello creative Long Beach Musicians? The LBML had another good night this week. I had some friends come in and play their set all stripped down, congas and all, Mr. B played some of his own songs and I played some of my LB protest songs all backed by my friends the Mids, who vowed to come back with their full electric set after seeing the great venue the Puka offers. I have to say I was pleased with the inpromptu collaborations that occured, quality not quantity is my motto. Next week we will have a Ted Kane from Clevland doing originals with some of his special guests, I think they are all librarians, you know how they party! I am still looking for bands and singer songwriters for my songwriters throwdown, the idea is for all involved to write a song about the same topic and come and compare. A little bit of camaraderie never hurts. We will be picking a song topic this Monday. If anyone reads this please point me in the direction of artists like the one in this article in the NY Times.

We are working on it. Think of a shopping cart just cresting the hill, it's almost barreling down the mountain with wreckless abandon. I have told the girls behind the bar and keyboard to get the Myspace calendar up an running. LBML is always looking for bands to book on Monday Nights, if we like them they will get scheduled on the weekends. Hope to see ya there ackaraga.

Great show last night peeps!
Sorry for the lapse in my postings, I know working two jobs is no excuse for not letting people know what is happening at the Puka Bar. We have had many good shows including Good Citizen on St.Patricks day, Whit Boy James, Dal Peterson, The Crown City Bombers, Lap Steel Dou, Mr. B and his band. On Sundays we have an open Blues Jam from 3 to 7.

Almost Six Months Into The Long Beach Musicians League
When I started the LBML I had no idea what would happen. I had a great opening night, Stan Dewitt spoke about alternate tunings. I had Sander Roscoe Wolf bring a night of experimental music. Mr. B did the Loins share of bringing in new music with two shows booked. Both very entertaining. I had one singer songwriter come in and set up his sound t his liking. I had the April Fools Eve Ball with Long Beaches own King Killer's. Some punk rock girls tore the joint up that night. I had many empty nights where I would wonder why I was doing this. After setting up the stage for the Kareoke people I would soon forget the lack of interest in LBML and get to rehearsing my own music. It is nice to have a crowd, but practice on a stage with a good sound system is always nice. I have had some people drift in and drink a beer and leave, I have been asked by others what was going on, some of those people are now booking time. It took almost six months but LBML is starting to fill it's intended purpose. I have feeling that once it picks up speed it will be the hottest place to be on a Monday Night! I am looking to do musician mix ups. Building a band out of strangers is always more fun with alcohol. Tonight I have a drummer, guitar and keys from one group and a bass player, harmonica and another guitarist from another band. It should be interesting! Most of these musicians are just getting used to a stage and monitors, so my goal for the night is just to get a groove going and play a simple song. Next week, Bohemiean Rhapsody!
I have also met some great musicians on the weekends. Most have had a good time, some played to loud, some needed a pre-amp on their vocals and their band to turn down and some bands should have ________. The first six months there have been some noteable shows. White Boy James, Rocking Rose, Dale Peterson, Paperplanes, Barry Bremmer and The Lap Steel Duo. To mention a few. One New Band really rocked and I hope to see them again, they are the Riff Raffs from LB, great set of music. See them if you get the chance.
We also have a Blues Jam on Sundays that has brought in a few interesting renditions of blues standards.
All in all the LBML has been a success, and even when it wasn't, I still had a free rehearsal space, or labratory, is how I like to think of it.
Let me know if you would like to book a gig/bill/rehearsal in the future. For all of you that have come and participated I thank you. For those of you who have not ventured out on a Monday Night in six months, you need to get out more often.

If anyone know the Riff Raff's have them contact me.
Universal Sound Artists played this week and are now going to participate in the Lab that is LBML. Any other interested artists contact me at the longbeachhuntington my space.
