CITY ENDS ELECTRONIC BILLBOARD TALKS–FOR NOW

April 21, 2008

In a strongly-worded memo to the mayor and city council members, City Manager Pat West said that the city has ended discussions with Orange-based ad company Media Management Service about erecting six electronic billboards in Long Beach.

WHY I LEFT LONG BEACH ANIMAL CONTROL

April 19, 2008

When I was hired as an officer by Long Beach Animal Control on May 16, 2005, I was very excited about the opportunities I thought would be presented to me by working for the City of Long Beach.  I am an Eagle Scout, have a Bachelor’s degree in biology–option in zoology–and worked at Long Beach Animal [...]

NO BILLBOARD TALK AT TONIGHT’S COUNCIL MEETING

April 15, 2008

Yes, it’s true. For the second time, in as many times as it’s been poised to come before Long Beach City Council, the City Clerk’s office has removed tonight’s discussion of electronic billboards from the Council agenda.

LEST WE FORGET …

April 14, 2008

Electronic billboards would help retire the LB Museum of Art debt–and, really, who doesn’t want to retire?

Much has been said and written about how bad the electronic billboards proposal–which returns to Long Beach City Council on Tuesday night–would be for our city.
But all those scofflaws seem to forget: if the proposal is approved (and our [...]

ACRES OF BOOKS PLANS TO STAY IN LONG BEACH

April 8, 2008

Despite what folks at the city told us Monday, one of Acres of Books’ owners said this afternoon that they do want to keep the store open after its pending $2.8 million sale to the city’s Redevelopment Agency.
In fact, with some luck–and another building–one of Long Beach’s oldest businesses could remain here for years to [...]

UPDATED: ACRES OF BOOKS SALE: ARGLE-BARGLE OR FOOFARAW?

April 7, 2008

Some of you might have read this weekend about Acres of Books’ pending demise.
LBReport.com posted mutterings to that effect on Saturday, and the Los Angeles Times had something this morning.
I got the official word from the city earlier today: it’s true–and according to Craig Beck, director of the City of Long Beach’s Department of Development [...]

FLASH: LONG BEACH CONGRESSMAN VISITS LONG BEACH!

April 7, 2008

Rohrabacher to Cambodians: Free Tibet! Peace out!
That green blur you saw Sunday morning wasn’t The Riddler. It was the surfing congressman–Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach), in a grassy herringbone-patterned suit (hold the tie)–making a flying appearance at the fourth annual Cambodian New Year Parade on his way to Santa Monica. Thanks, brah!
But let’s hope you [...]

‘BREAKDOWNS’ LED TO BRUTAL DEATH OF ANIMAL SHELTER DOG

April 3, 2008

The brutal death of a pit bull suggests there’s trouble at Animal Control, a document obtained by the District Weekly suggests.
The March 15 report by registered veterinary technician Christine Culhno of Long Beach Animal Control describes an incident in which an untrained officer used a rabies pole to drag an out-of-control pit bull from its [...]

NFL STADIUM BESIDE THE QUEEN MARY? DON’T EVEN BOTHER ASKING

April 2, 2008

Just in case anybody is just about to bring up the idea of building a football stadium on the land next to the Queen Mary and inviting a National Football team to make its home there – because, really, isn’t somebody always just about to bring that up? — here’s a pre-emptive buzzkill, courtesy of the sports [...]
