WITH SO MUCH DRAMA IN THE LIBRAR-Y, IT’S HARD BEING SNOOP D-O-DOUBLE-G
Snoop Dogg talks to Councilman Dee Andrews about giving back to Long Beach
He wasn’t there to bemoan the possible loss of our concretinous Main Library if it closes due to budget cuts, but rapper-actor-football coach Snoop Dogg spent more than two hours Friday in the library’s Admiral Room, considering ways to give back to Long Beach.

Snoop Dogg, second from left; Deputy City Manager Reggie Harrison, far left; Long Beach Public Library Director of Library Services Eleanore Schmidt, third from left; and Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews, right.
The original plan, according to John Edmond, Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews’ chief of staff, was for the councilman to meet with members of Snoop’s management team to discuss Snoop helping out.
But somewhere during the talks about having talks, City Hall learned that the Long Beach native and his wife Shante Taylor wanted to come too–oh, and the E! Entertainment Television camera crew that follows them around filming Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood.
Except there’s no protocol for, well, for hosting Snoop Dogg in Council offices on City Hall’s 14th floor (do you use the state dinner china, or the historic Willmore City porcelain?) so they moved it to the Admiral Room.
“We didn’t want to disrupt business on the 14th floor,” Edmond said, adding that news of the celebrities’ visit “spread like wildfire. It was funny ’cause when i went back to City Hall, my colleagues were upset with me” because they missed it.
For their part, Snoop and entourage were late arriving because–ironically–they got lost.
“He said, ‘The reason I got lost is because it looks so good,’ ” Edmond said, pointing out how dramatically downtown has changed its look from the late 1980s, when Snoop attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School and what’s now City Place was still Long Beach Plaza. “He was down by the Pike somewhere.”
Once he arrived, around noon, Snoop spent more than two hours at the library, talking about ways to give back to his native home.
He’s already involved in Pop Warner football in North Long Beach, and hosts the annual fundraiser Snooper Bowl football game, but Edmond said Snoop expressed an interest in working with Long Beach’s Kroc Center–once it’s built, of course.
“Snoop made the point, if there’s a football bowl at the Kroc Center we can do it right in Long Beach,” Edmond said of the Snooper Bowl. “He even said ‘I can come up with a song for the Kroc Center.’ That’s amazing.”
“He’s there, he’s trying, so we can help point him in the right direction.”
Snoop also expressed an interest in possibly expanding the scope of his business presence locally, the chief of staff said.
“Kind of like the Magic Johnson model. There’s tourists who jump out and take pictures at VIP Records. Imagine if he had his own store,” Edmond said–emphasizing that Friday’s talks were just a very preliminary step toward all of this.
That may be–but Snoop will be back. We’re guessing he’ll return in, oh, about three weeks.
That’s because the Chrysler pitchman and Willie Nelson duet partner signed up for a Long Beach Public Library card and checked out three books before he left.
“Sports stuff–he went to the sports section and checked out a sports almanac, and then he signed autographs for the kids,” Edmond said.
