Note to Archdiocese: When you guys finally get around to cleaning house, you may also want to sack your PR people.

As news of the church’s $660 million payout spread, spokeswoman Carolina Guevara was quick to reassure us all that the Los Angeles Diocese will not be filing for bankruptcy. Investments and real estate sales will fund the settlement, and all schools and parishes will remain intact.

And she parted with a zinger: the church will continue to reevaluate “all of our ministries and services since we will not be able to offer them at the same levels as in the past.”

Is this an unfortunate irony that will reassure the parents of altar boys? Or is it spiritual blackmail and a punitive slug at unruly, vindictive followers? You decide.
