“I MAY HIT YOU TONIGHT!”

Debro Saad–whose daughter Star Harris is suing a Long Beach 7-Eleven franchise for an alleged slip-and-fall accident in 2004–is having a rough week herself.

At last night’s Long Beach City Council meeting, Saad tried twice to speak during the public comment portion of the meeting–but was cut off both times by Vice Mayor Bonnie Lowenthal, who was in charge of the meeting at that point.

Eventually Saad had to be forcibly removed from council chambers by Long Beach police officers, while the council took an emergency recess.

The reason the city silenced Saad? She didn’t fill out one of those cards you have to fill out and hand in if you want to speak during the public comment portion of the city council meeting.

“Where were the cards? I asked somebody, ‘Where are the cards?’ Every time I’ve been there, there have been cards. And nobody answered,” says Saad, who was there trying to drum up support for her daughter’s court case. “It couldn’t be any more obvious that they are trying to put this whole thing down and hush us.”

If the city council was trying to hush Saad up, it wasn’t very successful. She unleashed a lengthy diatribe against several of its members–and against the city attorney–as she was escorted out.

“I may hit you tonight! If not, you lying bastard, I’ll see you in court,” Saad is heard saying on the videotape of the city council meeting.

There’s actually no video–the city clerk’s office says the camera operators stop taping when the council takes a recess–but portions of what Saad says can be heard as she takes her leave.

“Bye, Ms. Lowenthal. You guilty, homes,” Saad continues. “You’re guilty of being negligent. You are District 2. You’ve done nothing but send people to take down fliers.”

Saad is referring to fliers she says she posted in her neighborhood, referring to her daughter’s case–but which she says were taken down by city employees. And on the tape, it sounds like she’s addressing Second District Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal.

But officials in Suja Lowenthal’s office say Saad had her councilmanic districts confused, and was actually addressing Suja’s mother-in-law Bonnie Lowenthal, the First District Councilwoman.

Officials in Bonnie Lowenthal’s office declined to discuss the incident. But Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews confirmed that Saad also threatened him as she left council chambers last night, and he’s not too concerned about it.

“I heard she’s threatened quite a few people. I just got a call from another guy who said she’s threatened him,” said Andrews, who took it upon himself to personally chase after–and help catch–an alleged flasher earlier this year. “I didn’t take it personal, even. She’s anguished, she’s upset. I would just hope that whatever she’s going through can be resolved.”

We’ll see how that works out; Saad told The District that she is planning to file a lawsuit against the City of Long Beach–and she believes the city council is scapegoating her.

“How am I going to hit anyone physically?” asked Saad, who breathes with an oxygen tank and says she is terminally ill. “Make the woman  in the oxygen tank out to be the bad guy.”
