CORRECTION: CITY ATTORNEY SHANNON IS NOT AMONG OFFICIALS WHO LET PREVRATIL OFF THE HOOK

City Attorney Robert Shannon should not — repeat: NOT — have been included in the list of high-ranking Long Beach city officials who were accused of looking the other way for years while former Queen Mary chief Joe Prevratil refused to pay full rent on the ship. I mistakenly reported that in this week’s issue of The District, and I apologize for the error.

My story — about a culture of insiderism at City Hall — paraphrases part of a wide-ranging interview with former deputy city attorney Jim McCabe, who told me that former city manager Jerry Miller and former auditor Gary Burroughs for years fended off attempts to force Prevratil to live up to his contract with the city. I mistakenly included Shannon’s name in that list.

McCabe contacted me Wednesday, hours after the story appeared, to express his discomfort with my error.

“Shannon’s name should not have been included in that “who for years” paragraph,” said McCabe. “He did contribute heavily to the angst that led me to retire somewhat early, so that mention later in the article is absolutely correct.”

Bob Shannon, may have not been one of the Prevratil practicioners. However, until Traci Kleekamp-Wilson made her allegations, and other issues arose, he didn't seem to have a sense of urgency on this matter. I believe, it would be fair to ask his office, if they've forwarded any information to the CA-Attorney General or District Attorney's Office.
