BEER & POLITICS AND THE PRESS-TELEGRAM

If you get around Long Beach a bit, you might have seen Press-Telegram Executive Editor Richard Archbold and his wife Pat–and P-T columnist Shirley Wild–helping judge yesterday’s Haute Dog Easter Parade in Belmont Shore, alongside yours truly.

(It’s true: I judge dogs. I know they’re judging me–with their soulful eyes and bushy tails and cold, cold noses.)

You might also have seen P-T reporters and photogs marching outside their Arco Towers digs today, asking MediaNews Group rajah Dean Singleton for a new union contract. (They didn’t get it.)

But if that’s not enough–and really, why should it be?–don’t miss tomorrow night’s Beer & Politics event, at 7 at Gallagher’s Pub & Grill, 2751 Broadway.

Seventh District Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga–who after the recent P-T consolidation asked the city to consider whether its ad dollars are really best spent at the ailing daily paper–will again lead an airing of the situation.

The rebuttal (the Democratic response?) or maybe just some answers will be delivered by the P-T’s own editorial pages editor Larry Allison–and former P-T publisher Ian Lamont, now a periodic LBPost.com contributor.

If that doesn’t make it a fun night, burgers are usually two for the price of one at Beer & Politics-ian events–and Widmer Hefeweizen is always on draft for the very responsible.

I Hope Rich Archbold shows up and explains how relocated and letting go 40 percent of the Press-Telegram staff will ” help ” the paper and the 19 cities it attempts to cover.
