A SAD STORY GETS SADDER

Aviles sisters’ aunt is shot and wounded near their burned-out garage

If you drove through the intersection of Tenth Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue yesterday, you might have seen a car wash in progress. It was a fundraiser for the funeral of Stephanie Aviles, 6, Jocelin Aviles, 7, and Jasmine Aviles, 10–all of whom died as the result of a fire early Friday, while they slept in an illegally-converted garage in the 1000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

The blaze most likely began when a space heater plugged into an overloaded power strip burst into flames, according to the Press-Telegram. The car wash Sunday raised more than $4,000, also according to the P-T.

But sadly, this wasn’t all the Aviles family news this weekend.

Some time around 7 p.m. Sunday–as LBReport.com’s Bill Pearl was first to report–the Aviles sisters’ aunt was shot in the leg as she stood near the charred remains of the detached garage where her nieces had slept.

(Local newscasters last night were first to report the woman’s exact relation to the Aviles family; this morning’s Los Angeles Times had the best description of the shooting location.) An unidentified man nearby also received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound in the incident.

Strangely, the Times’ Molly Hennessy-Fiske says the shooting happened Friday night, in her story on the newspaper’s website. It didn’t; it happened last night.

And despite what everyone except Pearl and the P-T reports, Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue is still an avenue, not a boulevard.
