SPORTS: ARMADA CURES “NEED FOR SPEED”

The Armada has been on a signing spree lately, adding Smoke Williams, David Parrish and Jerome Williams to the roster. For background:

Williams has been a force on the base paths in the minors since 2002. ‘Marland will bring excitement to Blair Field for the Armada,’ said Long Beach Armada General Manager Steven Bash. ‘The way he approaches and plays the game with his gifted speed and glove will easily make him a fan favorite and will make the 2008 Armada squad top contenders in the league.’

Parrish, a first round draft choice of the NY Yankees in 2000, is the son of former Detroit Tigers Great and 8-Time Major League All-Star Lance Parrish.  Parrish has been a catcher the past 7 seasons in the Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations, logging in 4 seasons at the AAA level.

Williams was a regular starter in the San Francisco Giants rotation in 2003 and 2004, going 7-5 with a 3.30 ERA as a rookie and 10-7 with a 4.24 ERA in his sophomore season.  Traded to the Chicago Cubs for Latroy Hawkins in the 2005 season, Williams went on to post a 6-8 record and a 3.91 ERA with the Cubbies.  Williams last pitched for the Washington Nationals last season.   His career major league totals currently stand at 23 wins and 29 losses with a 4.24 career ERA.

Although I'm not much of a baseball fan, last season I went to a bunch of Armada games and loved the experience. Something about being outdoors, the fresh green grass, perfect summertime weather...I'll be there again this summer. Probably won't paint my face or get an Armada tattoo, but I'll still support the team. Anyone on the fence about going to a game should give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
