R.I.P. JACK’S LIQUOR

Much has been written about the imminent closing of Acres of Books with nary a mention of its neighbor on the corner, Jack’s Liquor & Deli. While the developers are still presumably trying to find a fit for that revered bookstore in their block-wide construction scheme, there is no place in those plans for Jack’s, which will go off into that good night uncelebrated and ultimately unremembered.

So, good-bye purveyor of fancy canned cocktails and mini bottles of booze built perfect for the pockets of the businessman on the go. I’ll miss your suspect hot dogs sweating in their encased glass sauna next to the cash register. The only person I ever saw eat one of those was Tim Grobaty–and that was on a dare.

I never really had much use for you, outside of the occasional food prank or last chance pack of smokes, but just knowing you were always there was enough to get me by, but not quite enough to get me inside.

Me too, Russ. I miss the convenience of having a camera store I could walk to.

I’ve lived less than two blocks from Jack’s for about 20 years and will miss it, as I’m sure others in this neighborhood will. While I never ate one of those hot dogs I was tempted to when I went in there hungry — they smelled so good. And I saw lots of people eating them over the years, and no one died from one, so far as I know.

It was just so convenient to stop in there before, or after, I got off the bus and be on my way. And it doesn’t seem like it was that long ago that it was remodeled inside. I think it’s too bad it’s going to be gone. I’ll even miss some of the wacky people that went in there. Of course, I guess they’ll still be around!
