LIVE REV: PAPERPLANES @ PROSP + MORE

Daniel de Boom recovers from a long night and reports from Saturday night at the Prospector and beyond:

I woke this Sunday morning to find my hands and wrists smeared with blotchy ink like stamps in a passport. The original destination Saturday night was the Prospector to see the Paperplanes unveil some new tunes from their hot-off-the-press CD Rhinestone Republic. But first stop was a preflight cocktail at House of Hayden, which (as it usually does) turned into three or four. Band goes on at 10:00 and looking at the clock I figured we still had a good forty minutes, and we’d probably still be early enough to be able to grab a table. But front of the Prospector I immediately realized my mistake. The place was packed. Somewhere along the way the Paperplanes had gone and gotten semi-famous and were no longer my little secret. I flashed my press card—if you don’t have one of these—forge one, steal one, get one!—cover charges dissipate in their presence! And we (Lisa and Steven and I) pushed and squeezed and apologized our way to the front of the stage where (beers in hand) we took in the ‘planes new alt-country sound and became fans all over again. Made me wish that we were watching them at a larger venue where I could move without pushing my junk into the backs of multiple strangers, though. After three or four songs, we’re back outside walking towards Que Sera. Turns out there were at least a couple article-worthy bands playing the Que that night. The Death Mickies immediately brought us up to speed with short hook-y songs. There weren’t a lot of people at the Que—maybe 30 or so—but it was an enthusiastic crowd who braved the elements on this stormy night to be entertained at an old-fashioned punk rock show. The Death Mickies were appreciative: “Thanks for coming out in the rain to see us.” “Thank you. That means a lot to us. We’ll keep playing that song.” “Like the bumper sticker says, ‘vaginas are cool.’ This next one goes out to the ladies.” At one point Lisa leaned in to me and said, “Punk rockers are so nice.” Next were the Resevior Tips. According to my notes, the lead singer (whom I apparently thought resembled Kid Rock) introduced a song “…about my butt!” called “Buttalks” (“There’s someone behind me / he’s always talking shit!”) and I do have a very clear memory of the Resevior Tips leading the crowd in a sing-a-long called “I Hate Parking In Long Beach!” After that, it’s pretty cloudy. A ride on the bus when we became impatient for the taxi to arrive, another club, and then my bedroom in the morning, where I always wake up surprised after a night of heavy drinking.
