CHRIS GAFFNEY, R.I.P.

Roots rocker died Thursday at 58

Chris Gaffney, Southern California roots rock musician, died Thursday. He’d been diagnosed weeks before with liver cancer, but sources said his April 17 death was the result of a fall and the almost inexplicable collapse of his vital signs at Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach. He was 58.

In his last talk with Gaffney, August 29, Chris Ziegler asked Gaffney whether he could be called the front man of the Cold Hard Facts, the band he co-founded with Dave Gonzalez. No, Gaffney said, “But I’m the oldest and meanest.” Would the others have to fight him for that title? No, Gaffney said, “guess I’ll just have to die.”
