CHECK OUT ENTRANCE TONIGHT! (SHOW OF YEAR)

Well, this is about one of the best bands in California and even though bassist Paz once lived downtown, this is their first-ever Long Beach show. Guy Blakeslee was a field-blues kid on Fat Possum and learned lots from Elizabeth Cotten before he learned lots from Hendrix; drummer Derek James is Paul Whaley/Ginger Baker and an impeccable dresser, and Paz plays those dino-bone low tones Mike Watt made me sure to look out for. Three-piece electrocuted—I once said ‘nuked’—blues that’s heavy and celestial at the same time. Can’t find a satisfactory MP3 of their definitive ‘Grim Reaper Blues’ (with an opening howl by Guy that always makes the crowd tense up) (album version on Tee Pee is cool but it’s not the living thing) but here’s some videos and etcs.

Also if you don’t bother clicking through: absolutely go to this. Que Sera with Deadly Finns (ex-Go Go Go Airheart), Grand Elegance, Gabe Hart solo and Toney’s new band, too, I think? Show of the year in Long Beach so far. I sick on you if you bail. Show of the year! THIS WEEK’S SHOW OF THE YEAR! Entrance erases all.

‘Grim Reaper’ live at SXSW. This is a rock.
