THE (OTHER) DROUGHT VICTIMS

Who will speak for the landlocked ski boats and dry docks?

It’s been the better part of a week, but the cover story on the drought in last Sunday’s New York Times Magazine is still one of our favorite pieces.

Why? We really like being yelled at for wasting water–but mainly it’s photographer Simon Norfolk’s amazing cover photo of a flatbottom ski boat marooned in the dirt of a receding Lake Mead.

The story, by Jon Gertner, is excellent–but Norfolk’s picture has everything we like: a flat-bottomed ski boat, a ski boat–oh, and an old tire. Tires are cool. It’s a great photo, and the Times must like it as they’ve added a section of photos from Norfolk’s other assignments.

Only one problem–well, two actually. One is, I don’t have a ski boat (say, something in a Sanger, circa 1955, with an Olds 303 and lots of Nicson bright stuff). Two is, you have to join the Times website to see all this stuff–but just give ‘em that email you never use.
