SUSPECTS, SHOW WINNERS, MORE EVEL KNIEVEL

Police make three arrests in Long Beach’s first 2008 shooting

Eight days after three people were shot and a fourth–25-year-old Jonathan Fernandez–
was fatally wounded at a New Year’s Eve party, Long Beach police announced three arrests Wednesday.

As the Press-Telegram’s Tracy Manzer reports here, and LBReport.com’s Bill Pearl reports here, police have arrested one adult and two juveniles and charged each with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder.

Police haven’t said who allegedly did the shooting, because their investigation continues–but this is far from the only murder of 2008.

On Friday, police found a body stuffed into a trash can, which was then loaded into a shopping cart and left in an alley in the 1600 block of East Tenth Street. And on Sunday, Cabrillo High Student Florentino Rivera was shot to death near 15th Street and Cedar Avenue.

In other news, the P-T’s Don Jergler reports that the American Kennel Club’s annual dog show–the Indianapolis 500 of dog shows, let’s say–will be held in Long Beach through 2009, including their landmark 125th anniversary show that year.

Jergler writes that the festivities are “expected to bring more than 9,000 dogs to downtown Long Beach,” abandoning us to write our own punch lines. Sigh!

And lastly, did any of you see the recent two-hour Evel Knievel bio on The History Channel? I love that guy–but man! He was kind of a dick sometimes, no?

Anyway, if you missed that, for shame–but here’s a 1971 profile of old No. 1 from The New Yorker, which is just classic. And still kinda crazy. Enjoy!
