PATH OF A SHOOTING

Trail of suspects in New Year’s Eve shooting leads … where?

It’s been three days since a gunman opened fire on a house party near Pine Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, wounding two unidentified women and a man–and fatally injuring 25-year-old Jonathan Fernandez.

And, barring a development in the case, this is usually exactly when you stop hearing about a shooting: when the trail begins to cool–no offense to local police, who have been working this one since early Tuesday.

The most recent newspaper story on the New Year’s Eve shooting comes from yesterday’s Los Angeles Times; reporter Tiffany Hsu ledes with the news that police still–as of yesterday–didn’t have a motive in Fernandez’s slaying.

And … that’s it, so far. We should all know–from years of watching Cops and C.S.I.–that the first hours after a crime are the most important to a police investigation. They’re also when news organizations typically do most of their reporting on it.

But what’s going on now? Police either have run out of leads, or–more likely–they’re just not saying a lot to the press. (Contrary to what you may think, they don’t tell us everything, and we’re not clairvoyants.)

Maybe investigators will get a break–on the fourth day after this shooting. And maybe we’ll hear about it.

I hope so. All shootings are bad, and this one feels particularly egregious.
