PARTY ICE

Homeland Security’s sense of fun

Accused of being a little too similar to President Bush– i.e., having gotten a job she’s unqualified for through a combination of nepotism and cronyism– Julie Myers, head of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division, recently provided a remarkable example of the kind of judgment she brings to her post. At a Homeland Security Halloween party, Myers was one of three judges who awarded the “most original costume” prize to a white man who darkened his skin with makeup, and wore prison stripes and a dreadlock wig. Of course– who doesn’t enjoy the thought of Homeland Security officials delighted by a white man pretending to be an dark-skinned criminal?

A lot of people, it turns out.

Once her idea of fun became public, Myers apologized for her choice, but still sent out an ICE spokesperson to defend it. Explained the spokesperson: “[The winner] was not wearing blackface but makeup that was a darker color than his skin”.

Just a darker color– see, that way the costume could be offensive to both blacks and Latinos. I guess that’s what made it so original.

I didn't see anyone claiming they were offended when Gene Wilder did the same thing in the movie silver streak. How about Dave Chapell when he portrays a white man? I can't stand Julie Meyers but I won't vilify her over a Halloween party costume. I will over the illegal alien scum raping babies, driving drunk, stealing identities, thieving benefits, spreading disease and murdering the citizens of this nation. If you think it is demeaning for a white person to portray a black then look at it from the white man's point of view; we have a lot more reason to be offended at this person's actions.

UGH! We have become a nation of apologists who are walking around on pins and needles at every turn.

But it's still OK to call a White guy a redneck and a cracker and portray him as poor inbred unintelligent "trailer trash." I wonder how many costumes at the party were that?

What idiots don't realize that doing the whole black face with a prison costume is offensive? There was a room pull of these people? Must be a KKK meeting, no wait just members of homeland security. Combined with the guy in the justice department in charge of protecting voter's rights saying we don't need to worry about how senior citizen African Americans will get IDs because they die before before they become senior citizens, I think we need to clean the federal goverment of racists.

In reading this article and some of the comments... One would be insane to believe that racism isnt alive and kicking in this country. Its almost depressing.
