P-T DOES THE RIGHT THING WITH FULL DISCLOSURE

A Press-Telegram editorial reveals that the paper’s editorial board supports the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce effort to recall troubled and controversial school board member Michael Shane Ellis. No surprise there.

But with a simple, parenthetical sentence the P-T also acknowledges that a member of its editorial board, publisher Dave Kuta, is also a Chamber board member. That is a surprise. Not Kuta’s dual memberships; The District revealed those nearly three months ago. Actually, we wrote about it twice.

No, the surprise is the Press-Telegram’s new policy of transparency. And it’s a very pleasant surprise, one that soon — let’s hope — won’t seem surprising at all.

Dave, Nicely said. Transparency from *any* media source, including print, is always both highly desired and refreshing when demonstrated. We only wish that “troubled and controversial School Board member Michael Shane Ellis” would likewise ascribe to transparency…the sort legally required of *all* elected officials…and publicly disclose both his current employer and his financial status. That he continues to avoid doing so speaks volumes about the contempt with which he clearly holds not only his colleagues but his constituents. It is our great desire that Ellis voluntarily resign from our School Board but since he steadfastly refuses to grow a conscience and do so, I urge all of his constituents to vote to recall him when that question finally hits their ballots.
