You can’t keep a good conman down

Normally when something you’re doing turns into a disaster, you don’t decide to rely on one of things you know caused the disaster to improve the situation. But then, nothing about President Bush’s vanity war in Iraq has been normal. Still, this report from McClatchy was a bit of a surprise: “Ahmad Chalabi, the controversial, ubiquitous Iraqi politician and one-time Bush administration favorite, has re-emerged as a central figure in the latest U.S. strategy for Iraq.”

Chalabi, still on the lam from a bank fraud conviction in Jordan, proved himself a much better conman than anyone in the Bush administration– no small accomplishment– whose hawks, along with gullible members of media, he’s been so adapt a manipulating into doing exactly what he wants. His last break with the administration, though, seemed final, since he was strongly believed to be working for Iranian intelligence as well as his own self-interest. But apparently all as is forgiven, while at the same time the administration is trying to convince the public that Iran is the most dangerous nation on Earth.

It would be hilarious, if people weren’t dying.
