JUDGE TO GYMNASTICS PARENTS, LB UNIFIED: IT’S ON

Wilson High Title IX lawsuit headed to court next month

Now we know: the parents of a group of Wilson High School gymnastics students will definitely be squaring off against Long Beach Unified School District in court Feb. 19.

In a rare but brief three-bylined Press-Telegram story from Kevin Butler, Paul Eakins and Karen Robes this morning, U.S. District Judge Gary A. Feess apparently folded his judicial-robed arms in court yesterday, and declined to order Long Beach Unified to reinstall the Wilson High spring floor that all the ruckus is about.

Parents of the female gymnasts who use that floor filed a lawsuit last year alleging discrimination against their daughters, when the school district had the floor removed to put in weights and other fitness equipment.

The district, which denies any wrongdoing, had planned to have the gymnasts practice elsewhere.

Lawyers for the parents had asked Feess to ask the district to re-install the floor (a spring-loaded floor used in practicing gymnastics) until the trial.

But Feess said Thursday in court that he’d defer on the issue until the trial.
