EATING YOUR WORDS

Doing good made easy, effortless, facile, simple, smooth

As everyone knows, few technological advances have created such opportunities for wasting time as the internet. And now, the time-wasting power of the internet has been harnessed for charitable purposes.

The UN’s World Food Program (WFP) has launched FreeRice, an online vocabulary game. You’re given a word, and you must choose its synonym from a list of four possibilities. For every correct match you make, the site’s advertisers donate enough money to buy and distribute ten grains of rice to the WFP. According to the BBC, FreeRice has 1 billion grains of rice, enough to feed 50,000 people for a day, since going online in October.

So the next time you’re killing time on the computer, remember you could also be helping (aiding, assisting) others.
