DEATH SCENE

RIP:  Irony. You will be missed.

Death often comes unexpectedly. Even when the deceased has been unwell for a long time, it can still be a surprise. Irony had been ailing ever since 1973, when Henry Kissinger, a war criminal, won the Nobel Peace Prize, and the audience at the awards ceremony didn’t burst out laughing. Still, no one could have predicted Irony’s swift and brutal death on Monday.

At a White House press briefing, questions on the situation in Pakistan touched on the general principles guiding the Bush administration, and the following exchange occurred between a reporter and White House Press Secretary Dana Perino.

Q Is it ever reasonable to restrict constitutional freedoms in the name of fighting terrorism?

MS. PERINO: In our opinion, no.

Stunning, isn’t it?
