CEO SUFFERS AFTER SEEING KID SLAVES
Merry Christmas! Indian kids were beaten with pipes
A British paper revealed that a Gap clothing subcontractor was using Indian child slaves to produce clothing for the big Christmas rush. Gap officials respond by complaining about their own pain. “It’s deeply, deeply disturbing to all of us,” Gap President Marka Hansen said Sunday. “I feel violated and I feel very upset and angry with our vendor and the subcontractor who made this very, very, very unwise decision,” Hansen said.
If you’re counting that’s “deeply” times two, “very” times three. Also “unwise.”
American conservatives like to complain that the most salient characteristic of liberal politics is victimhood–the idea that only liberal interest groups claim status as victims. (Of course, claiming that liberals are destroying the America you love is itself victimspeak, Rush.) Today, we can all claim the moral high ground: now the CEO of a major corporation can declare the use of child slaves as “unwise”and reframe the issue as one in which her personal feelings (disturbed, violated, upset, and angry) are paramount. Who’s gong to pay for her pain?
Can I tell you what’s disturbing to me, what makes me go victimy? The Port of Long Beach. The port accounts for 40 percent of all U.S. imports—and befouls local air, clogs freeways—and with every import reduces the number and quality of jobs in America while rewarding governments for violating human rights and crapping up the environment. Last week, a business group used the port as reason to declare state government dead.
How about we make the port pay for itself? That’s what downtown business guy John Morris suggested in last week’s State of the City Address. (See LBReport for Bill Pearl’s comprehensive report on Morris.)
3) Or we could just go naked. Or not. No. Not.
